I'm 17 and I want to start learning programming . I asked my brother for some advices about programming and he told me some things , but after that he also told me that in his opinion at my age I need to know atleast 2 programming languages and that if I start learning programming and combine it with my thing (bodybuilding) I will end up nowhere . Do you think he is right ?

Howling with laughter here. I am more than 50 years older than you, and I have learned two new programming languages in the last 5 years. Also, I learned my very first programming when I was almost 10 years older than you.

Your brother is talking a load of old cobblers, probably because he is jealous, doesn't want you to be better than him at something.

Please give your brother a clip round the ear with love from me.

I started programming at 10, but I don't think 17 is too old to start, you just need to know the right people. I would start with HTML/CSS because those are dead simple, doesn't really take any skill besides remembering the HTML tags. CSS might be a bit tricky, especially if you aren't the artistic type. It is still worth learning the basics though, never use old deprecated html tags. Make sure you learn HTML5 right from the get go. After that I would learn PHP. Also learning a bit of Linux might actually make the process easier, believe it or not.

I say you need to know the right people because there is more to programming than just knowing the language. For example, there are important concepts all the good programmers know about such as binary trees, dynamic programming, etc. You can hit me up at yomoto.kazuma@yahoo.com if you need any help.

There is also many great programmers that can offer their advice at stackoverflow.com as well.

No, you are not too old. The quantity of languages is irrelevant. These days you need to know HTML and CSS (but I don't consider those languages) and then just pick one or two languages and become a master at them (Javascript, PHP?).. not just simple 'hello world' type things that most people seem to be doing. They say it takes 10,000 hours to become a master at something, are you ready for that?
