i run a small but growing web dev shop, we currently work with PHP based CMS systems lately i am getting feedback that we need to work on asp.net based solutions as well

i dont want to work with both , i want to pick one technology but i need solid grounds. some might say that linux is the apple side of the world, i can buy that but that maynot be enough for clients

can some one tell me the true pro's & con's , risk , benifits in going either way

or point me to a resource

I Prefer PHP , here are the reasons.

1) Its open source, Most widely used scripting langauage in the world.

2) PHP run in multiple platform - windows too

3) PHP Supports dozens of Database - MySQL is my favorite

4) PHP has lot of online help forums and community - http://php.net

5) PHP is really very easy, similar to C langauage. you don't need to have any prior langauage experience inorder to work with php

6) and so on

TBH you have to deliver quality and functional applications regardless of technology. At the end of the day it shouldn't be determined by technology as they both serve the same purpose in many ways. I am a .net developer and work on a client site who are debian/bsd based running apache tomcat backed with postgres. Our apps work together without any lanuage or platform issues getting in the way but we each work with what we know and are most comfortable with. If you're a small outfit and work with clients where cost is an issue then I would go the PHP route as its biased towards the world of open source. If cost is not an issue then go .net where you have the sexy tools such as Visual Studio and the mega ker-ching SQL Server.

PHP is free and Visual Studio .NET 2008 is certainly not.

You're looking at several hundred dollars to purchase a copy of VS. Additionally, while .NET 2008 will interface with MySQL ok, it really shines when combined with SQL Server, so there may be an additional expense in that regard if you're wishing to push the envelope as far as it'll go. In the land of freebies, .NET has AJAX.NET and Silverlight (MS's answer to Flash), both of which are phenomenal and save considerable time.

From personal experience, VS + SQL Server 2005 is a very powerful combo and I can easily churn out extremely robust apps in no time. Combine them with AJAX.NET and Silverlight and I guarantee a skilled developer can churn out apps in a FRACTION of the time it takes a PHP developer (unless the PHP dev is just copying and pasting code or something) and developing with AJAX or Silverlight provides built-in functionality that PHP certainly has no match for). All in all, I'd go with .NET (I did, in fact). It's well worth the expense, in my book.

But...having said all that...PHP is still free. :) You can develop in .NET without Visual Studio using freeware apps and/or compiling at the command line BTW, but you'll wish you hadn't (I did it for 3 months...not much fun).

P.S.--If you were looking for programmatic reasons to switch or not, I have none. Their core functionality is essentially identical.
