I am an equity researcher in an asset management company in Bangladesh. I am fairly good at MS Excel but sometimes I feel like I need to do something that existing features of Excel can not do. So, I might get into the realm of recording/coding macro, VBA, VB etc.
I am a Finance student with good quantitative skills. In asset management profession, what are the coding skills(along with VB) that I need. How should I approach in learning VB and those languages?

You could get a copy of VB and install it on your computer. Then get a book on it. Some books are meant as reference guides, others as tutorials, you want a tutorial that starts with the basics. It's not so difficult or complicated that you need to take a class, someone like you should be able to pick it up.

This is what I did with Pascal about 30 years ago. Visual BASIC is a little more complicated, it has a lot more features, but I think it would make a good learning language because it's logical and easy to understand, taken step by step. And it's also a professional language and you can do amazing things with it.

Good luck!

here is a link to the msdn (microsoft developers network) that offers a few different tutorials for Visual Basic

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Search/en-US?query=visual%20basic%20tutorials&ac=8

You can also google search "Visual Basic Tutorials" and it should give you some good option for getting started in VB. There are also tons of books for VB or any programming language that you want to learn that are well written and easy to understand.

Download a copy of Visual Basic Express. It's free and actually a very powerful standalone product, similar development suites from Microsoft used to cost a fair bit. I guess it's MS trying to compete with opensource.

VBA is a bit like a cut down version of visual basic, a sort of pseudo-VB scripting language, it's used inside Access, Excel and other MS office products.

VB provides a lot more power, you can use this to build standalone applications, which can be useful for what your looking at. Either way, learn VB and you will easily understand how VBA works.

And best way to learn is to find a problem/mission and have a crack at it. Getting good at programming is like any form of excercise/skill - practice makes perfect.
