I've purchased my domain through directnic and also paid them to host me. Now I am totally confused. I've asked them for help, but they keep answering me in "i know about computers" language! From what i have learned so far I downloaded Cute as my FTP (if that makes sense). Now since I don't know a thing about designing the website by myself I want to find a template to use. Well, once I find a template what the heck do I do with it? Somehow save it into Cute and make all the changes in Cute? So if this is correct (or am i totally wrong so far), what do I do to make it so that when you type my webpage in the search engine you are looking at the site that I designed in Cute??? I am soooo sooo lost! No wonder website designers make so much money!!! This is very confusing!

Well, I think it would have been a bit smarter to learn html and/or php before you pay for a host, but I'll help you anyways, lol.

First, you're gonna want to know your site's FTP information, such as it's host, username, and password. The port is usually 21 (if it's not selected for you already). Then, google for free web designs (I suggest looking in oswd.org for free, easy-to-use designs). Download that, unzip the file and upload the unzipped file directly to the site via CuteFTP. Keep all directories the same. Then you can edit the files to your liking from there. It's pretty self-explanatory. If you want to edit the text on the page, edit the index.html file.

Cute ftp is an ftp client- you don't design pages in it.

You need to get an html editor:

There are paid ones, like Dreamweaver, Frontpage (you might actually have a copy of this if you have bought Microsoft office) or Expression web.

You can download a free one at http://nvu.org (NVU)

Once you have a template (find a free one at http://oswd.org)

you need to open it in the html editor and add your content to it.

Once you've added your content, then you save your file or files and then you upload the page or pages to your website, making sure to name the first page as index.html

Search engines are a whole new ballgame. Worry about getting the site designed and up first.

I've never heard of cute.. Try the software the person above suggested.. Nuvu or something like that? I use DreamWeaver but it's pretty expensive and I don't really like it so I wouldn't recommend it.

Too make your site show up in a Google Search:

To be decent at Web designing, I think you pretty much have to be good at researching this type of stuff on the web - and Yahoo! answers is a great place as well.

Good luck!

Well you need to upload your files via a FTP Client, meaning you need to know HTML or some other designing language to upload, and you can go on from there....Feel free to email me with questions:
