hoe do i stop a buffer overrun( dumps memory) and shuts down my computer?

blue sreem of death comes up, and states that to protect my computuer a dump of memory has been done.

Did you change any hardware recently? Windows can adapt to most hardware changes but can be very sensitive to major ones(motherboard, Cpu, etc.). Also, did you install any drivers recently? Blue screen usually indicates some kind of kernel/driver issue.
