I put a document together consisting of 3 different sections. The only pages I need numbered are 3 pages in section 2 of the document. The first page I numbered in the header lets me put in "page 2" like I want. The other two pages, however, keep having the same page number. When I put "page 3" on page 3, it shows up like that on page 4. When I try to change page 4 to say "page 4" page 3 all of a sudden says "page 4". Sorry this is confusing...I just know I am missing something really easy.

The purpose of a header is to have something that is common to all pages of the document. When you 'View -> Header & Footer' in MSWord, whatever you enter in those fields will be the same across all pages. Since you're manually typing in 'Page 2' the header gets 'Page 2', and thus all pages have the 'Page 2' label.

It's possible to 'Insert -> Autotext -> Header & Footer -> - Page -' and have an auto-incrementing page count, but other than that, whatever you type there is going to be on all pages, the same.

It's mostly used for putting header images, or logos on pages, or to put a by-line next to the auto-page number, or the like. Anything you manually type in, though, is going to be on all pages.

Are you just typing in the page numbers? Headers and Footers will repeat exactly what you put in there for each section. What you need is a field where Word will populate the actual page number for you.

Go ahead and type "page " in your header.

Then where you want the page number to appear, there are 2 ways to do this.

If you are in the Header/Footer edit mode, it should show the header/footer toolbar, and you can just click on the icon that has the "#" symbol in it to automatically put in the page number.

But to see what's it's actually putting in there, go to the Insert menu > Page Numbers. It should bring the Page Number panel where you can give it special settings. If you click on the Format button, you'll automatically go to the Page Number Format panel if you want to change the style, the number it starts at, etc.
