I am an engineer and frequently use VB in excel to write macros to perform specific tasks. I am trying to get started in web programming but there seems to be so many languages and programs that I am confused and can’t get off ground zero. With my knowledge in VB do you suggest I try to continue in VB or go another route?

If you're experienced with VB, you'll find VB.Net most comfortable. I would suggest looking at both C# and Java as they're much more widely used and easier to find help/samples on. C# will be more friendly for you.

See if you can get a copy of Visual Studio .Net to help you out. It is an IDE with a lot of drag and drop packaged components in C# and VB.Net that let you look at and tweak the code. You'll get a lot of hands on experience with the code this way without having to learn everything from the ground up.

On server area it may manage database, of filesystem base on request documents. at present the in ordinary words significantly prevalent server to apply that is IIS in ASP pages, yet that is an uncommon used selection as moth of the asp pages are advanced in VBscript.
