Ubuntu-Kbuntu question?

So I recently installed both Ubuntu and Kbuntu onto my computer after about a year of being frustrated with vista (shocking i know :) Anywayy, I cant get any of the visual effects to work. On Ubuntu, i get the error "effects could not be enabled". Ive googled the problem, but every explanation i've read seems overly complicated. Due to my complete lack of knowledge about computers, this information is of no use to me, and often leaves my frustrated and confused. I was wondering if it had anything to do with my crappy graphics card (IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 950)? Any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

Without knowing a thing about your computer or your setup, it's difficult to say.

However, one thing you can do if you want to try to figure the problem out yourself, is this:

In a terminal window as root, type the following in

# export DISPLAY=1:0

# X -configure

then wait a little while. This will generate a file you can mess around with without changing any of your normal GUI settings. You can load this file (as an ordinary user or root) with

$ X -config ./xorg.conf

A good place to start is to turn acceleration off, and then just start turning settings on and off. The easy way to turn a setting off is to comment out the line (in other words, make the line start with a # symbol), and if that doesn't work, to copy the line for the setting you want to turn off, paste the copy just beneath it, and comment out one of the two and change the other one in a way that makes sense. That way you know what the default is supposed to be when you come back tomorrow and forgot everything you did yesterday.

Hi.

This answer is that your graphic card is not capable of handling the graphics. (or) The graphics driver is not supported by Ubuntu. (or) your graphics driver is not enabled.

In this case of the latter, do

System --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers.

Ubuntu will look for your drivers for you.

That is your best answer.
