Question:
Why do some people type "c" with their index finger?

The "c" key belongs to the middle finger. The "v" and "b" keys belong to the left hand index finger. (This statement is about the QWERTY keyboard, for clarification.)

Who knows why, because it's the way the brain types with out thinking about where the keys actually are.

The way they teach in school is ridiculous and stupid and really just messes people up. The whole "Home keys is ridiculous.

That being said what finger do YOU use? cause it's quite uncomfortable for me to use any finger other than my index finger. So if you use your middle finger you have to be moving your index finger along with your middle finger instead of just moving one finger. It is very inefficient.

Unless you're typing with your hands parallel to each other as opposed to in a /\ shape... but OMG that's going go kill your wrists

In the days of the mechanical typewriter, pressing a key on the keyboard took a significant effort, and the key had to move a significant distance to print the character. Modern electronic keyboards have very little movement to the keys, and in the case of a tablet's on-screen keyboard, there is almost no effort required and there is absolutely no movement when a key is 'pressed'.

It is very easy with these modern keyboards accidentally to press an adjacent key, especially as keyboard sizes and key spacings vary. Personally I use several different keyboards, and it is not easy to adjust to the different key spacing and key sensitivity while using all the fingers of both hands.

Many people cannot type quickly with two hands. It takes a lot of practice to synchronise the actions between both hands. This is why some people stick to one-finger typing.

As others have suggested, if it feels right for the individual, and they get the right key strokes on to the page in a reasonable time, does it matter how they achieve it?

I was a kid back in the 90's when I learned to type on my own. They didn't teach typing in elementary school. After using the keyboard for a while, I learned how to type without even realizing it. One day I realized, "Hey I'm typing and I didn't even know I knew how to do it without looking." I can type fast but I don't type the keys the "correct" way. As for an old typewriter, forget it. I will never know how they used their ring fingers to push down those heavy keys back then.

Some of us type only with our index fingers.

The QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow typists down and avoid hammers colliding on old mechanical typewriters. It is not a rational layout.

I agree that a competent keyboard user wanting to achieve the greatest speed would be disciplined in the fingers they use for different keys .... but we all get used to our own style are not necessarily trying for the highest possible speed.

As long as we achieve what we want, I have no problem with anyone else's keyboard quirks.

I personally think pressing c with my index finger is more comfortable. People type based on how comfortable they are with their hand/finger placement. Everyone is different.

If you compare the "incorrect" movement from F to C, you'll see it's a mirror image of the "correct" J to M.  While nonstandard, using the left index for F & C is simply consistent with the right index usage.

Because you don't get to dictate how people type?

WHOOP WHOOP IT'S DA SOUND OF DA KEYBOARD POLICE.

I typed that C with my index finger just to annoy you. On my right hand. Oh yeah.

because it is right underneath the "f" button where the left index finger rests on. So that's maybe the reason why we type "c" with the index finger.

If I had to guess, it's probably people who were not formally trained in typing. When I was in high school (1987-1991), most people did not learn to type unless they actually took a typing class using typewriters. It was not a skill in the average person's skill set. It's possible people who learned later in life developed different habits.

Because they can... if it feels comfortable for them why shouldn't they? I use my index finger to type the c, it is just easier for me.

I always type with my index fingers, except when I'm gaming. WASD

It is easy to curl in the index finger to the c and use the middle finger for the x.

On curved keyboards the C Key sits almost directly below the F/D key meaning both fingers are equally close. I like it because I used the C + E alot and it is much faster then using the same finger for both.

Why, exactly, does this matter?
