Question:
Question about installing Linux under my laptop it's a Toshiba Satellite L500?

Can someone who has the same laptop and has gotten Linux to work with it provide me links for the drivers that are required? I can't seem to find the wireless drivers for this laptop required for Linux... I'd really like to duel boot Windows and Linux, but if I can't get wireless on the Linux system.. well it's kind of pointless then. Anyone.. help?

Normally I go to http://www.linuxonlaptops.com for this sort of thing, but today I didn't find anything, so I hit ye olde http://www.google.com/linux. Bingo:

You want the rtl8192e driver which should be in your /lib/modules/ subdirectory (or rather a subdirectory of that) as rtl8192e.ko. Do a sudo /sbin/lsmod and see if it is loaded already. If not, you can do a sudo modprobe rtl8192e and if it tells you it doesn't know what module you are talking about either hunt it down at Ubuntu or recompile the kernel yourself.

I don't like Ubuntu much.

You will also need firmware for it which should be in your /lib/firmware directory but if you are not a free software advocate they are good about collecting useful firmware for there (and if you are they are horrible because tey are so good at collecting free software there).

Linux will set up on surprisingly plenty any pc made interior the final 15 years. the only favourite difficulty is wireless enjoying cards yet your pc has an Intel wireless card and those many times artwork with none subject. probably one subject to bear in techniques is which you mustn't could acquire plenty application from the internet. it is probably the main important distinction between living house windows/Mac and Linux- each little thing you prefer and purely approximately each little thing it is been shown properly suited such as your equipment is interior the kit supervisor. different issues like Google Chrome may be further to the kit supervisor somewhat than being downloaded quickly.

I don't have that laptop but did find this info.

It looks like it uses the intel 5100AGN wireless card. See the first link; intel says it will work with linux.

The second link explain how to install the driver. THis link explains how to do it in ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). It should also work in the newer versions also. If you want instructions for the newer version google for "intel 5100AGN +intrepid" or whichever version you are using.

Good luck

Which flavor of linux are you using as that will make a difference. e.g. Redhat, Ubuntu, Mephis, etc etc
