Question:
How to write outside of a table in Microsoft Word
2008-07-31 09:19:11 UTC
I have created a big table but I can't select the area outside the table no matter what I do. I am writing my resume and I need to write my contact info above the table. I can't select that area. Microsoft Word thinks that anything outside the table is the page's margins which it's NOT! And if I double click on the area above the table, it opens the header editor. I don't need a header! Just the area above the table!! PLEASE HELP!

To get your cursor into the area above the Table, without adding any new rows, select the Table, click on the Table menu and choose 'Split Table'. Your cursor will now be above the table and you can type.

That's always a pain! Try this (with Word XP (2002) and adjacent versions. Word Vista (2007) probably has something similar).

1. Insert a row right after the first row.

2. Select and move all the text in the first row down to the new second row.

3. With the cursor in the second row, click the Table->Split Table menu item.

4. Delete the upper table (the old first row).

You should now be able to type above the table.

Hope that helps.

Have you tried using "Format, Borders and Shading".? Then add the required line to the particular line of the table grid. Or, and this might be a pain if you have everything already in a table... Create the data list using tabs (no table) and when complete convert it to a Table, but select a Paragraph return option as the column break, not Tabs.

you can put your contact info in your header, then from the header/footer menu, click "page setup" icon, go to last "Layout" tab. there is option for you to set a "Different first page" header/footer. so your contact info will not repeat on every page but only display on first page.
