What are the similarities/differences between Ecplise and Visual Studio?

I'm taking a class which uses Visual Studio, and I can't get it to work...can I replace it with the very FREE Eclipse?

They have different ways of storing their project settings, so if you need to share your entire project with someone else, that might get in the way.

Also, Eclipse and Visual Studio don't support the same programming languages. Visual Studio is meant primarily for C# and VB.NET, and also has modes for C++, J#, and ASP.NET. Eclipse was originally made for Java, but is intentionally extensible to support other languages, such as C/C++, PHP, COBOL, JSP, HTML/CSS, and others.



As far as features, they're very comparable.

Visual Basic is a component of Visual Studio. Visual Studio normally refers to the entire suite of development applications (Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual C++, etc.).

I used Eclipse and it's amazing. I'm not sure how much it's like Visual Studio though.

Eclipse is a programming environment - you can use it for just about anything. VS is an IDE for a few Microsoft languages. What's the difference between a roller skate and a jetliner?
