Can anyone recommend a good website builder for artists?
I am a professional artist with tons of images in all media. I've had 3 previous companies design my website over the past 5 years. All fine, but none of them let me upload new images, update text or do anything myself, they all charged me an arm & a leg to do anything. I want to do it on my own, I even have all the images, text, designs, layouts all finished, but I'm not web-builder savvy, barely know HTML & though I'm trying to understand website language, I am just not grasping it all. I can't seem to find a reputable builder on-line or otherwise that are for artists or photographers (someone who wants to post multiple images of their work). There's good web-builders on-line (I think they are) but not really for artists, I need something that I can have multiple pages with multiple pics that expand to show really good quality images. Anyone can recommend something, any personal experience? I'd really appreciate it. THANK YOU!

Do you already have a web site up and running somewhere? Do you already have a name for the web site? If you don't already, then probably what you want is called a "web hosting service". If you already have a site up and running, then you probably already have a web hosting company.

They provide the computers and allow you to upload your own web site to their computers. Then they keep everything running. You are free to change anything you want.

They charge a fee of course, maybe $20-$30 a month depending on how popular your site turns out to be.

There are dozens of those companies. You should probably do a search on the internet for web hosting companies and read what they have to offer. Maybe there is even one near where you live. Once you sign up, they can help you with transferring the files. Some of them even have phone numbers where you can talk to someone who can help you. Sometimes the company that provides your internet service offers web hosting.

If/when you have everything ready to go it is a fairly simple process. The main web site file is labeled "index.html"

That is the first thing that people see when they visit your site. You upload that file to the web hosting service.

If you have images and other pages, you upload those too.

The process of transferring images is called "FTP" which stands for "File Transfer Protocol" (frankly what it means isn't important though in case you were wondering).

You will need an FTP program for transferring the files. There are several of them out there and they are usually free, depending on whether you are using a Macintosh or Windows.

You instruct that program to connect to the web hosting company (the web hosting company gives you the information you need to connect) and then you use the program to upload the "index.html" file and all the other images and web pages.

Usually that is all there is to it. At that point the web hosting company takes over and makes your site "live" so that people can start going to it.

If you want you can upload a new index.html and/or new images whenever you want in order to update the site.

I don't know this web designer personally, but I have seen her work. She's a fellow artist and a self-proclaimed web monkey.

She might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I hope she helps.

I like to find a website similar to the one I want, save it, then open it in KompoZer and basically fill in the blanks.
