Help with my website?

Question

Ok, need help, my website is really crappy! i made it myself and i have "limited" knowledge on web design at best!

I just need some straightforward tips or ideas on how to make it kick ***! FOR FREE! lol, web designers are trying to score 600 bucks from me to do this, can anyone help please?

Hey. I am a web designer, or I should say, I've done five years full time doing web design and multimedia courses at uni.



I was never really good at anything else, so when I discovered that I actually had some small talent for web design I was thrilled. I was blessed also with meeting a beautiful arts student at uni, who I married.



I have now been working at KFC for four years. My wife left with the kids earlier this month. She's not returning my calls. And you want to know why? Because people like YOU get tips for free on the internet.



Six hundred bucks... maybe I could eat meat for once.



Keep a consistent color theme, and don't use clip art.

There are a lot of free templates available online. One of my favourites is http://www.getfreewebdesigns.com/, but there are loads out there.

It's often a lot easier to start with a good solid design, and then customize to your liking.



If you don't only want help with the look of your site, but also with the technical workings, you might want to consider using a (free) content management system. Those will make it very easy for people with no programming knowledge to set up an impressive website.

You didn't say what kind of site you're trying to make, but here they have open source systems for everything from a simple blog to a online shop to a interactive learning environment and a lot more in between: http://php.opensourcecms.com/ - all the popular scripts like WordPress, Joomla, etc are there and you can try them there to see what suits you, without the need to install everything yourself.

Then when you've picked a script you like, simply install and use the friendly user interface that most of them come with to customize to your liking and needs.

There is no easy way to make it "kick ***". Good web design is a skill.



If you want to keep it simple, it fits your purpose, and your web host has the capabilities for it (PHP, SQL) then look at CMS/Blog software like Joomla or Wordpress. That way you will have a multitude of templates to pick from.



If you want to LEARN about web design, then you will want to start learning HTML and CSS. From there, maybe play around with Photoshop and Illustrator for the graphics side of things.

You can make a kick *** flash website with Adobe Flash CS4 Pro,for some epic awesomeness,adding a flash intro rendered with adobe after effects after some flash modifications, hmm,Some java scripts although.

There are numerous tutorials around and HTML is a very easy language to learn if you take the time.

Whatever you do do not cover your site in flash as suggested. Trust me, you and your mates may like the look or you flash site with animations all over the place but your visitors will hate it and go somewhere else

Sounds lame.



FOR FREE, sounds like labor of some sort I thought people were capitalistic but seriously I would like $600 myself because its a job and well if you can't do it someone will but not for freeeeee, that's too many e's I mean free don't won't to bargain on whats already free.

whatever or whoever made your website, as you think is crap, it is first the topic of your website that will make it interesting than the format.

Format (styles, colours, etc.) are there only to help display the content and present your topic.

Most of websites are "crap" because their topic sucks !
