If on windows, which I know you must be if you don't know prompt. Go to Start >> Run and type cmd. A black screen with some text will come up. This is your C: prompt your mom is talking about in the DOS shell. This is the guts of your computer without the nice GUI (colors, folders, etc. )

I don't know what you did wrong!

As other respondents have indicated, this is the old DOS-mode command line environment. You can access it by clicking Start->run, type in 'cmd' then press enter.

Earlier Windows (2, 3, 95, 98) actually sat on top of DOS. Current Windows (NT, 2000, XP, Vista) are true operating systems and the command prompt environment is included for compatibility and for people with great familiarity with DOS.

That all said, you can mess up using command prompt commands. In particular, files you delete from the command line do NOT end up in your recycle bin. Best to stay away from command prompt unless you specifically know what you're doing and why,

Somebody scared your mom or she misinterpreted something she heard. If I had to guess your mother heard about bypassing the Operating System.

first open a DOS window

(look for cmd.exe )

it lives here

%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe

It is faster to run this way

Start

Programs

Accessories

Command Prompt

this will open a 'DOS WINDOW'

So now what??

I found a link:)

the short version

In the beginning was DOS

I mean to say that it was the only way and i mean only way to run a computer.

Before the web there were BBS's bulletin boards

These were simple tree-like menus where you chose stuff to download

Screens were green or orange ONLY

A fast modem was 1,200 nows its 56,000, if you use dialup at all.

No graphics

In this barren wasteland you used

DOS

to survive.

It is a universe of 'stuff' to make computers do anything you want!!

Thats why your mom doesnt want you fooling around.

Hey , tell her its educational !!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS

DOS (from Disk Operating System) commonly refers to the family of closely related operating systems that dominated the IBM PC compatible market between 1981 and 1995 (or until about 2000, if one includes DOS-based Windows 95 and Windows 98 systems): DR-DOS, FreeDOS, MS-DOS, Novell DOS, OpenDOS, PC-DOS, PTS-DOS, ROM-DOS, JM-OS and several others. They are single-user, single-task operating systems. These operating systems ran on IBM PC compatible type hardware using the Intel x86 or compatible CPU.

DOS is a single-user, single-task operating system with basic kernel functions that are non-reentrant code; once a process is begun, it must be allowed to run until finished before the same process can be used again. The DOS kernel provides various functions for programs, like displaying characters on-screen, reading a character from the keyboard, and accessing disk files.

Other systems could be used with some allowances and customization for different hardware designs. Hence "Z-DOS" (Trademarked by "Heath-Zenith Computers") could run most MSDOS/PCDOS code, up to and except for video output—for the Z100 family of computers had a better, denser graphics capability and supported twice as many colors as the same eras common IBM/AT machines.

She is not. Just don't do it. She probably will cutyou off if you do, and if you need to ask this, you aren't capable of using them successfully anyway.
