Same as the present...



MySQL is great for smaller applications that don't have a lot of capital. Things like community forums and small business websites. It is free, and it has a great deal of support from the community.



Oracle will likely remain the industry standard for enterprise level applications. It is a must for any medium sized corporation on up.



The two don't really compete, though...so to compare them in that manner is apples to oranges. They are a similar product in that they both deal with databases. Other than that, they serve two very different populations.

for a start up, mysql will do just fine. personally, i feel that oracle is over-rated, and i've never touched SQL server. just hire someone who knows what they are doing. a lot goes into database design :)
