.bmp doesn't handle transparency. The only way it's done with .bmp on certain Windows programs is using "magic pink" --- 255, 0, 255 - or- FF00FF -- but only if the particular program is coded to render that transparent.

Anyway, in GIMP you have to go to "Layer" > "Transparency" > "Add Alpha Channel" , you then should be able to cut or erase to transparent background, or add a new layer with transparency. You'd have to save it in .gif or .png format.

edit: if you can upload the image or email me it with a better description of what you want to accomplish, maybe I can help a little more. Why would you want wallpaper to be transparent? what would go behind it?

Actually, the bmp format can handle transparency, if you make it a 32 bit bitmap and save it with an alpha mask. When I have tried to make transparent bitmaps in Gimp, I get a message that it cannot handle transparent bmps. Perhaps in future versions?

Here are a couple of other ways I know of to make transparent bmp files:

Method 1:

a) Create the image in any program such as GIMP, then save it as a transparent Ping-24.

b) Open that file in Gif Movie Gear (they offer a free trial at gamani.com) and save it as a bmp.

Method 2:

a) Using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop, make sure your image is all on one layer, but with transparency.

b) Ctrl+click the layer in the layers palette, to select the contents of the layer. (Or select the shape using other methods.) Save the selection under Selection... Save Selection... and type in any name.

c) Save the file as a bmp, then choose 32 bit in the dialog box that comes up.

You will know if your bmp transparency is good if you open it in Movie Gear and it doesn't have it matted onto a black background that wasn't there before.

Ehm..

Here you can find a free download of GIMP: http://bitly.com/1mF5UzM

GIMP is a free program you can use for a bunch ot tasks like photo retouching, image authoring and image composition. In my opinion it is the best free photo editing software on the market. It's not as powerful as photoshop, but it's free and can be augmented with plugins and extensions. These features make it the most advanced free photo-retouching software. GIMP can be used as a simple paint program or a complex image-manipulation software (thanks also to to a very advanced scripting interface)

I recommend not to use torrents or downloads from anywhere else, as they might be backdoored.

undecided what you're asking, yet any image editor that could cope with PNG records (which helps transparency / alpha channel) could be sufficient to create photos on your purpose. while you're asking approximately photos records of already latest apps, those records have been converted by means of Xcode in the process the build technique and are not familiar PNGs anymore.

You don't.

Only .png's and .gif's are/can be transparent.
