So I just saw the movie "The Social Network". I am very interested in website design to begin with, but currently all i know is HTML. I understand that i will never make anything as popular as popular as Facebook, but i would like to work on building websites. I noticed in the movie that Mark used a number of coding languages. So far i have been able to identify HTML, Java, and Perl. If I am to succeed in the Web design field, What other languages do I need to learn.

MySQL and API's for php, ruby, etc.

Facebook was originally written in php, although it's now c++:

C++ is probably the most largely used programming language, so it is very priceless to are aware of it. It's no longer rough to gain knowledge of. Traditionally, BASIC has been taught as a primary language, because the title implies, however it's not largely used at present, so it's of little sensible importance as soon as you have got found out it. There are many different languages you would gain knowledge of: APL, Algol, Ada, Fortran, COBOL, Java, Javascript, PHP, Perl, Python, PL/I, RPG, you title it. Be informed that programming is like composing track: Anyone can gain knowledge of to do it, however probably simplest men and women with a typical knack for it grow to be quite well at it. Of direction, should you simply desire so as to add it in your resume, you do not always must be well at it (however on the other hand, if you're no longer well at it, it does not serve so much intent to start with). The cplusplus website online is lovely well for reference. Whether or no longer the tutorials are well is dependent plenty for your persona and finding out form. I've in no way used tutorials for any languageā€”I simply learn the reference fabric and begin coding. But a few men and women do love to be led by way of new standards earlier than they try some thing on their possess.

I believe it's a personal choice. HTML is static, meaning if you code in HTML your pages never really change (unless you're using some crazy Javascript). PHP is very powerful (based on Perl) and is free and opensource. Also, you can test PHP on your own machine using Apache web server. If you're going the Java route, you need to learn .jsp (java server pages). If you like microsoft and .NET framework, go with asp or aspx. There's also Ruby and others, but they're mostly outdated.
