check where you put them, for instance, in the My Documents folder there is a sub-folder for 3ds 2010. There is also another in the C: drive. check program files/autodesk/3ds max 2010 and there check if your materials are in the right folder. another thing could be that the files are corrupted, another version or maybe they didn't install correctly. when you go into material editor try opening the files from there. check all that and see if it works. good luck.

in your material library window, there is never anything there by default. It's always blank. You have to direct your library to your actual .mat file, which all of mat library files that come with the software are in your 3D Max install folder. So in your material library window, on the bottom left, under file: click "open" and navigate to your main 3d max material library folder which is usually "c:/program files/autodesk/3ds max 2010/materiallibraries" your main material library is the one called "3dsmax". Most of the others are mental ray materials, or multi sub-object materials created for the doors/windows feature in max, or the foliage feature.

Hope this helps!!

I teach 3D Studio Max online on a 1 on 1 basis. I have just added a new feature to the classes which is access to your full class video for 1 week after your session to review, learn, write notes, and perfect. This feature is something I just started last week, and already the feedback is incredible. If you are interested in taking classes, please visit my website for information on pricing, and fill out the contact form. Make sure you include a date and time that would be good to call you for a brief introduction and personal evaluation to create a lesson plan for you.

I hope to hear from you!
