How to List a Domain Name

There are two principal steps to make your website on the internet and registering/booking a domain name is the number one.

A domain name builds the address of your site and can end in . com, . net, . org, . info, . us, . biz, . tv and further.

Directly afer you have registered your name, you will pick a web host (2nd step). The web host is the guts of any website as this is where you build and publish your pages, build purchase fillings, insert service and preserve your site.

A Web host is the server where the website is stored, which also provided the E-mail server and other types of servers for your site depending on the type of site you are going to be designing.

Some sites do offer hosting along with the purchase of a domain name, but they offer limited space and a term called "bandwidth" which is now much traffic your website can handle in a certain period of time.

Once you have bought your domain, and please make sure before you do that someone else has not already bought and registered it. Then you either will have to find a free host or pay for hosting. I personally recommend paying a monthly or yearly fee for hosting, if it is a free host there is not a guarantee that your site will always be up and running, your E-mail account is running properly, etc. Once you have a host they should have instructions on how to use Dreamweaver to upload your site to the hosts server.

Hope that helps!

Web hosting is virtually 'space' on the internet, just as you have space on your hard drive or mp3 player, where you can store a limited amount of data.

Try and establish how much space you will need, and choose a hosting package that suits that. When you buy a domain name, the company will probably offer you a deal on hosting - this is likely to be the easiest way of doing it. If you choose this option, you will be able to everything through one control panel.

Otherwise, you can look on ebay for a very cheap deal, but you probably need some more knowledge to change the nameservers on your domain control panel - ask your web hosts about this and what to change them to.

When you choose your host, don't only look at the space, also bandwidth - basically, how many visits can your site have monthly. This will be listed as a value (e.g. 100mb, or 2gb etc.). The higher the better. I wouldn't worry too much about bandwidth unless you plan to have a very high volume of visitors or offer big downloads.

Also make sure that your web host will allow you to upload the site you have made in dreamweaver. Something listed like a 'file manager' (or, if you know how to use it - FTP access). Otherwise, you could use something like a 'site-maker' that most hosts offer.

I reccomend www.123-reg.co.uk which makes everything very easy.

Hope this helps, Tom.

The answer to "putting it online" is the web hosting :-) When you create your website.. it has to be running on a computer that's connected to the internet AND has a web server program running on it (such as Apache or windows IIS). A web hosting company does all that for you, and all you have to do is create/upload the web pages you want to display. You don't have to worry about setting up a server, or security issues with having people being able to access your computer running the web server program. The domain name registration is just that.. you pay someone to let you have the domain name and then that someone points that domain name to the place your web server program is running. It's also possible (but more involved) to setup your own server at home/work and run your website from there.

You can create a site on dreamweaver and put it online after buying the domain name, but you'll still need hosting. This is what puts it online. Having the domain name just gives your site an address. But you have to "buy" or "rent" the space. Think of it as your house, apartment, whatever. It has an address, but you also have to pay to live there. Pay for the accomodations. That's what hosting does. There are different hosting companies with different features and options. Here is a page with some helpful info on building a site and choosing a host: http://sahmsnwahms.com/gpage13.html

All a domain name is, is just the rights to be located at a set name, instead of typing an IP address to get to a website. Instead of typing 200.515.324.12 you can simply type a friendly, easy-to-remember name. The web-hosting, is a server based somewhere that has space allotted to your account. When you purchase the hosting account, you will be provided name servers, which you update on the account for your domain name, and then the domain will propagate towards that hosting account. I recommend you use Godaddy.com to get started with, I believe they provide a free hosting account with banners implemented into your pages. Since you're just starting, it's a good basis to start with. And godaddy.com is dirt-cheap, and very reliable.

Some domain name companies will also offer hosting services, what your paying for with hosting is storage space for all the files that make up your site, and bandwidth, from their servers, to allow people to view those files.

There are also loads of Free Hosting sites, but most expect some form of advertising to cover the costs.

You can direct a domain name link to anywhere so it doesn't matter who you hosting is with, just make sure it's reliable and is going to be suitable for your sites needs.

I've added a link to a free hosting company I use but do some research on the net to find one thats good for you.

As you've probably noticed, there are quite a few different web hosting companies out there.

One thing to keep in mind no matter WHO you choose... it is generally NOT a good idea to get your web hosting from the same company that is doing your domain name registration.

That's kind of like putting all your eggs in one basket. If you're not happy with one or the other service, it's much more difficult to switch if they're both with the same company.

For domain name registration, I usually recommend GoDaddy...

http://www.godaddy.com

For web hosting, I've been quite happy with HostGator, both in level of support, and features they offer -- for example, the Fantastico auto-installer, which will let you install full-blown web applications like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, osCommerce, and so on with just a few mouse clicks.

Other features to look for that won't SEEM immediately important, but can be, down the road...

1) Unlimited subdomains. So you could have...

http://newsletter.example.com

http://shopping.example.com

http://training.example.com

http://discussions.example.com

And so on.

2) CRON. In other words, scheduled tasks. Very important for web applications that rely on periodic maintenaince (like updating search indices, deleting inactive users, old messages, etc).

3) Unlimited parked domains. Want to register more than one domain name and host a completely different site with ONE hosting account? No problem.

4) Unlimited email addresses (real, or forwarded) on your own domain.

The list goes on. Check out the features for yourself, here...

Yes you'll have to buy a web space from a web hosting provider. It could start from $4 and normally they would require yearly payment in full. Take a look at this one

http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.planBusinessPlus

you'll get free domain if you host with them.

For hosting your website you could use CuteFTP. It's just like windows explorer(drag and drop). you'll feel comfortable with hosting with couple of days.

A web host provides you with a web server, database server, and email server space. If you don't know how web servers work you should do a great deal of reading before launching or attempting to launch a site.

First you need to have a name ... sounds like you got one.

Then you need a company to "host" it for you. That means they will put it on their servers so the whole world can see it.

I pay £4 a month to www.startsimplehosting.com they are good but l dont know if they are worldwide.

Dont get tempted by companies that say they will do it for £1.99 a month as they just add bits on as they go and its soon expensive

But put it where, that's the service your web hoster performs, as well as web space, Bandwidth, Blog and Gallery, e-mail and maybe even the Domain name

Well, it really depends. I recommend going with a host who can be flexible and if you need more space you can just upgrade. With that being said you might want to check out http://www.tnederlof.com

They are usually flexible and you can IM them anytime. Good luck!
