I was thinking of installing php and mysql onto my hardrive, so it acts like a server that i can use locally to test the websites i am building. Is this a good idea, and would i need to install apache ?

You can make use of your IIS for the PHP, so do not need to add Apachet.

The link is below (use the Windows installer, it is much neater, unless you decide to go for apach anyway).

Remember to get a GUI for your MySQL, some on the mysql site listed below.

If after a time you get serious about your MySQL, then get Navicat, there is a MySQL and a Postgresql version. Navicat is the Bee's Knees of GUI database management. You can do absolutely everything from in there, where ever your database might be.

I would suggest installing Vertrigo. Its an AMP package consisting of PHP, MySQL and Apache. Just download and install it. Its easy to manage, you don't have to manage PHP, MySQL and Apache separately. I have been using this for my PHP projects for more than a year.

Download Vertrigo from here: http://garr.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/vertrigo/Vertrigo_221.exe

Let me know if you need help with the installation or any other issue - neerajlall2k@gmail.com

You can do that and, yes, you'll also need web-server software such as Apache, unless you already have something built in. Whether it's worth it when internet access is so fast and hosting cheap is another matter. I don't bother using my dev setup any more - I just use an online dev server.

The Recovery disks were hidden on your old hard drive, and your PC User Manual explained EXACTLY how to burn your Recovery Disks. IF your old hard drive died, then you have to order Replacement Recovery Disks from the laptop manufacturer. They will explain it to you when you call. TIP: Store-bought Vista disks don't have the required drivers, so don't bother trying to use one, unless you get all drivers FIRST.

I use EasyPHP. It's very easy to install and use. It has everything you need to test your sites.
