How do you protect your software from being downloaded for free?

Question

I hired a programmer to create a software program for my small biz. I would like to add a download link to my web site and use paypal for payments. How do I protect the software so not just anyone can download it. I'm worried about search engines finding it and returning it in results, and I'm also worried about a user 'bookmarking' the webpage and giving the url out to people. Any suggestions appreciated.

the best way is whenever someone click on the link ask for a username and a password before allowing your software to be downloaded. if the person has the authority i.e. if he is a registered user then he should be able to download it by entering correct user name and password otherwise not. in this way no unauthorized person will be able to download your software. hey! but remember to charge for the registration fee.

the another way can be that u can allow for the software to be downloaded but u should not provide the serial no. for free.

i think u will be able to solve the problem.

Basically that's the wrong approach - don't sell the software, sell a license to use the software.



Allow users to download the software for free, but program in a serial number system. Program the software to not work unless a valid serial has been provided. Sell serials, not downloads. Ask your programmer to put this into the software.

First, check that it actually belongs to you. The author may have given you the rights to use it, but it is still his software and he may have it copyrighted. Secondly, don't put it on the net. You can always send it by E-mail or snail mail.

there are places to put files when you are using commericial vendors for your payments. That will secure them from being accessed outside of the vendor. BitPass is a good solution for this.
