Help with page numbers in Microsoft Word?
Hello I am trying to insert page numbers into my 140 page document in Word
the requirement is that the first page be blank... then the following pages that contain copyright information, indexm, abstract etc... be in roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc...) ...but once the actual document starts....the page numbers have to switch to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,......
I am not sure how to break it up this way
can someone help me?
thank you

You didn't say which version of Word you're using. I've got Word 2007...here's how to do it there.

First, ensure that you split the sections (first page, roman numerals, arabic numerals) by inserting a page break between them. Don't use the regular page break, you have to go to the Page Layout ribbon, click on Breaks, then select Next Page under "section breaks". Now you can insert the page numbers.

On the Insert tab you'll see a Page Number button. If you click on that you'll get options for where to place the page number.

With the page number selected you'll have a Design tab. On that tab check the box labeled "Different first page". The first page number will disappear.

On the second page double click the page number. Along the ribbon bar at the top, click "Link to Previous" so it is not highlighted. Click Page Number again and select Format Page Numbers. From the "Number format" box at the top select i,ii,iii. At the bottom of the page set the page numbering so it starts at "i".

When you get to the actual document and you need page numbers 1, 2, 3, etc, follow the same procedure as for the 2nd page, except choose numbers instead of Roman numerals and have the numbering start at 1.

The process is similar in older versions of Word but you'll have to find exactly where to format the page numbers...I just have Word 2007.

Good luck!

The trick is to put Section Breaks at each point where the page headers and/or footers change, disconnect the headers and/or footers from the previous section's, and change or remove the page number formatting.

In versions of Word prior to Word 2007:

To create a new section, you add a section break this way:

1. Click where you want the section break to occur.

2. Click the Insert->Breaks menu item.

3. Click Next Page (usually. Sometimes another break type is called for.)

4. Click OK.

Now to give a section different headers and/or footers from its predecessor, you do this:

1. Click the View->Headers and Footers menu item.

2. To disconnect the header, on the Header and Footer toolbar that pops up, deselect the Same as Previous button (usually the fourth to the left of the Close button).

3. To disconnect the footer, do the same as Step 2, but first click in the footer.

Finally, to change the number formatting, do this:

1. Click the Insert->Page Numbers menu item.

2. Click the Format button.

3. Select the number format in the Number Format list box.

4. Reset the page start at one with the Start At combination box.

5. Click OK.

6. If you already have a page number field, click Cancel; if you don't, click OK.

In Word 2007:

1. Click where you want the section break to occur.

2. Click the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

3. Click the Breaks button in the Page Setup group.

4. Click Next Page.

Now to give a section different headers and/or footers from its predecessor, you do this:

1. Double-click in the header or footer.

2. In the Design tab that open on the Ribbon, deselect the Link to Previous button in the Navigation group.

3. To disconnect the footer, do the same as Step 2, but first double-click in the footer.

Finally, to change the number formatting, do this:

1. Click the Insert tab on the Ribbon.

2. Click the Page Number button.

3. Click the Format button.

4. Select the number format in the Number Format list box.

5. Reset the page start at one with the Start At combination box.

6. Click OK.

7. If you already have a page number field, click Cancel; if you don't, click OK.

Hope that helps.

View / Header & Footer / click the little paper icon that has a # connect up it. this might insert the internet site variety. in case you pick to insert it like a million of four particularly of purely a undeniable internet site variety, click the comparable icon then style an area and the be conscious 'of' and click the subsequent icon - the paper with 2 + indicators on it. good success on your paper!
