Hmm, this is a hard question because programmins pretty hard and most people learn something hard and it develops the foundations of good programming such as C++.

A better idea might be getting into scripting and work up from that, with scripts you can try out each line before you do it. Search for batch scripting on google, Windows comes with all needed components :P

My best batch script remotely connects to a computers registery, changes the firewall to allow remote connections, enables remote connectivity, reboots the computer and then connects me to it. :D Batch scripting is suprisingly powerful but only allows you to do a limited number of things, C++ will allow you to write a program, VB is an easy programming language that is an alternative, it's fairly easy to learn.

Being some what older myself I would suggest you look at one of the BASIC family languages. If you are new to programming I believe you will find the relatively English-like commands easier to grasp and allowing you to produce a wide variety of programs.

You can still find a number of decent books to help get you started and work at your own pace. I would reccomend you try to locate a copy of:

USING BASIC 2nd EDITION

Phil Feldman & Tom Rugg

QUE Publications ISBN: 1-56529-140-9

It's still possible to try your first programming attempts using the Qbasic 1.1 interpreter which can be downloaded for free from any number of sources. If you have the resources PowerBASIC has a 32 bit version which has expanded features and yet can compile old code into a Windows console application.

Any programming language is easy, its just the matter of in how much time you learn to write "Hello World!" in that language...

It all depends on what you want to do. Some programming languages are easier to use for certain applications than others.

No longer in use, but

RPG (Report program generator)

You simply fill out a form, the program runs. I haven't seen it since VMS systems went (mostly) away.
