Software to develop Ipad apps?

Hi,
I have programming experience and would like to try developing apps for the ipad, but I seem to be hitting road blocks.
I'm not very familiar with Macs and I'm borrowing a Macbook right now. It's running (what I think is) Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I tried downloading Xcode, but was unable to without upgrading.

So my question is this: How do I create Ipad apps without switching operating systems and without paying the apple developer fee? What software do I need?

You only need to pay for the newest Xcode. Xcode 3 will work (so it says) and is a free download.



Go to the developer.apple.com site, click on Members, and use your free Apple ID to sign in.



Under DEV Centers, click iOS.



Under "Downloads" theres a "looking for an older version?" download link. Click it.



Scroll down a page or two to find Xcode 3.2.6 and iOS SDK 4.3 for Snow Leopard. Open the triangle for download links to the Readme and .dmg installer.

Hi, I see you're new to the world of Apple. You must upgrade to at least 10.7.4 and download Xcode.. I'm not saying you can't compile objective-C on the command line but come on....



iOS 6 is out in a month in a half and if you want to be able to pull that upgrade with ease then you might as well upgrade now.



I have an old macbook that Apple skimped with a 32 bit EFI and I can't upgrade to 10.8 doesn't that suck... thanks Apple for cutting corners. Luckily my virtual machines run a version for free.



You don't have to pay for the latest version of xcode...



edit: I should also mention that if you don't pay for the developer program you won't be running those apps on any device anytime soon..
