Installing Ubuntu Hardy Heron as a web hosting server

The Perfect Server - Ubuntu Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server)

Friends of mine would use nothing else and prior to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS they were using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS so apart from the upgrade they saw no reason to change

Hi.. Your choice between Windows hosting and Linux hosting should depend on your specific needs, the type of website you have, and the various features that you need supported. Here’s a look at the main difference between these two types of web hosting. Linux Vs Windows Hosting : 1)Operating system (OS) used - Windows works on the Microsoft Windows Server operating system but Linux Web Hosting uses the Linux operating system such as Red Hat, CentOS and Debian. 2)Server access - FTP access (transferring files from hard drive to host server using the File Transfer Protocol) to your files is possible on both Windows and Linux. 3)Stability and performance 4)Cost effectiveness - Since Linux is an open source OS and is free to use, Linux hosting is often cheaper than Windows hosting. 5)Features and languages supported - Microsoft proprietary features such as ASP, .NET, FrontPage are mostly supported on Windows Web Hosts, some of these features do have support on Linux. 6)Security - The common belief is that Windows servers are not as secure as Linux servers, mainly because the large number of users using windows operating systems.

Choosing between Windows and Linux is a personal preference. Each have their pros and cons. Windows hosting has had major improvements over the past few years.

Windows Hosting - Windows operating system, supports programing language like asp etc. It's fairly expensive due to licensing cost

Linux Hosting - Unix/linux operating system like centos, supports programming language like php, perl, python, cgi etc. Most linux hosting providers use LAMP (linux, apache, mysql, php). It's cheap because linux, php, mysql are open source.

basically, web host is a pc with operating system.

it could be windows based or linux based (very uncommonly mac system)..

for databases: for linux MySQL, for windows: ms sql...

Most web features run fine on both like PHP, mySQL, etc.

If you wnat to create your site using ASP, FrontPage, .NET, WSM, Access, MSSQL, or any other Microsoft based subsdiary, you need to use a Windows host.

web hosting companies generally offers Linux based systems. If you want windows based system, you must pay more...

you can look at here for more info: http://whichost.com

good luck...

All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not neccessary.

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

Well, in my opinion, Windows is way too expensive, Windows is always targeted by user with virus and malware. Linux is free, there are different kinds of Linux, and if you want to try one, just download Knoppix from Linux, is a bootable cd that you can even use in Windows. Most of the software are intended to be use in a Windows, but Linux is growing fast, without the worry of getting a virus. Check it out.
