Can I become a web developer without a computer science degree?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a specialization in business analysis. I graduated with a 3.5 GPA. I also have a CompTIA A+ Certification, but no IT experience at all.

I was planning on learning HTML/CSS, Javascript/JQuery, PHP, and MySQL.

Could this be done in a year and how badly would employers look down on me for not having a degree in Computer Science?

No degree and I was hired as an asp.net developer. I know quite a few people who hire for programming positions and they don't overlook experience either

Never heard that a computer science degree was required for anything. GPA's and certifications may impress some people. Where the rubber meets the road, can you do the job? You are learning the hard way about what it takes to land a good paying job. You learn your HTML/CSS, Javascript/JQuery, PHP, and MySQL and maybe some C++ and Phython and anything else you can think of, but if you can't sell yourself in the interview, forget it all. While you teach yourself, apply for jobs, any jobs. You want to interview your tail off so when the job of your dreams arranges an interview, you will be ready. I know people with no background or degree in their field, but they did extremely well in the interview and they got the job. The employer is paying to teach them what they need to know.

You can do anything you want to do. Especially if you are motivated enough.

The best credentials for the IT industry today are a MBA with web development experience. You are half way there.

When you get that job, never stop learning and never forget that you started from humble beginnings too.

Having a degree is the most important. If you're planning on making money out of web development the go directly the .net route - this is what employers are looking for.

PHP/MySQL is mostly seen as "basement programming" and an experienced developer seldom makes more than $60-80k. A senior .net developer on the other side makes 80-130k depending on skills and area.

Big companies are looking for platforms where they can get real support from the vendor.
