I'm not used to using any of Visual Studio's 2005 and 2008 version. I've used Visual Studio 6.0 which is old but I'm more used to it but I want to shift using the 2008 or 2005 version.

The question is, which one should I study or use? Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008? Which is one of the these two versions is advisable and easier to learn if a person already used Visual Studio 6?
Will it not give me a hard time shifting to 2005 or 2008? What are the differences?

I don't want to be left behind and I want to update myself of the new things included in a newer version of Visual Studio because its the Visual Studio 6.0 I only how to use.

Please give advice.. I have here IVOR HORTON'S BEGINNING VISUAL STUDIO 2005 but I'm still not reading it because I don't know which version is right for me. Any book recommendations?

Please help I really need advice...

Thanks everyone. I'll be hoping to hear detailed answers from you.

Ok, first ignore hammertym. You can develop non.Net applications with both - and standalone binaries, even .Net ones are possible - I do it all the time.

Truthfully, if you are going to upgrade don't waste your time on 2005 and go right to 2008. I have used both and there is not a lot of difference from the IDE point of view. There is a lot more web type of support in 2008 along with a number of developer aid improvements.

Biggest reason is work on 2010 has already started so no point in learning a product that will be 2 versions behind in less than a year.

I've used all of the visual studios from first release and never had problems going from one to the other.

As far as what has changed, see the sources below:

Visual Studio 2005 / 2008 will be using .Net, so you wont' be able to compile stand alone binaries, they will now require the .Net framework to be installed.

I don't find .Net hard, so many examples online. If you have used Visual Studio 6.0, and are good at that, I don't think you will have to much problem moving over to 2005. Just work away and you will get there.
