Is shifting from SAP to Java a good idea?

I've been in SAP/ABAP for 8 months and hardly find it interesting. I'm shifting to Java which I love a lot more...inspite of many people advising against it saying that SAP is better for my career. Is it really so?
I figured if I had to spend 8 hrs a day, 5 hrs a week working for the rest of my worklife, I might as well spend it on something I'm passionate about.

Hi Deep,

If you are working on SAP and that too in ABAP, but still not finding it interesting then I think you should look for a change of job in a good company who really uses SAP in their business.

If you still want to be in JAVA, then work on SAP Netweaver product suite which gives you exposure on ABAP+JAVA coding in Web Dynpros and BSP applications.

Hope it makes things some what easy for you.

Hi Srivaitaran, I think that what you have asked is not the perfect question. Because SAP is an ERP and Java is a programming language. Since, I was a SAP PI Consultant for 2 years, then I quit my job to become a Freelance C++ Developer for last 3 years (because it was my dream - and now I am happy living it). So, I know the best of both worlds. Now, I'd recommend that no matter what - you should learn Java, and if you can get a job in SAP - go get it. Java is used pretty much in SAP - and as a matter of fact SAP products have been developed in Java itself (as far as I know). Moreover, in SAP XI (which is now SAP PI) we used to use Java for mapping. I have friends - who started with me as SAP Consultants and are right now working in SAP AG, developing the products of SAP in Java language. So (in my opinion), in short, do both: * learn Java * get a job in SAP I hope this helps well. If any more queries, you can mail me from my profile page. Regards, S!D

You can learn as many language you want because they are still the same, giving u the output. I learned ASP,JAVA,PHP,LotusScripts,C,Shell,PL/SQL which some times help me to solve many problems.

Sometimes you need other programming languages to aid you in a project.

Yes SAP is better for your carreer, but learning other language makes you better than anyone. I'm a JAVA,.NET and Oracle Developer developer which i earned more knowledge than a single SAP developer coz i know more.

I love JAVA , coz knowledge is freedom

Dont worry, you wont be spending the rest of your life working with one technology.

Something else will come along in 6mths and make what we use/know now obsolete.

Change is always good for the grey matter.
