Like does it have a desktop and stuff?
Or is the whole OS just the command lines for codes?

Technically, Unix isn't even either of those. Unix is an operating system, like Windows or Mac OS. It is simply an environment for programs to run and access the hardware of the computer (resources like hard drive, video card, sound, network, etc.). That is all it does--run programs using the computer's devices. That being said, one of the programs that runs in Windows is called Explorer.exe. This is the program that drives the desktop. Without explorer.exe, there wouldn't be a desktop, or file manager in Windows. Other programs in windows are Internet Explorer, Firefox, iTunes, AIM, etc. They are all programs though. GUI and command-line are programs as well (albeit, more complicated, and definitly more useful, than most).

Unix and Unix-Like OS's like Linux are based on the command line to give you a lot more power than you have on an OS like windows

depends on what version you use.
most modern versions have a GUI but the command line is still very powerful and can be used to do almost anything you'd like. on the other hand NT in windows is very restricted and has fewer and fewer commands with each release of windows, basically all its good for is file management

GUI is your customary domicile windows own laptop. often you employ a mouse, or mouse + keyboard. Command line is with a text cloth base element. Open up Command instant or DOS (or a Terminal once you're on Mac/Linux) and that's command line based. you're able to do an analogous on the two, yet i detect it speedier to seem up IP information on a domicile windows container with the command line. domicile windows + R > CMD > "ipconfig /all" the thank you to get that by way of the GUI is start up > administration Panel> community settings > real click your community and bypass to properties, and so on and so on. plenty speedier for the command line.
