1. Your numbers are a bit wrong. Debian has 48,610. Ubuntu has 50,473. Not a big difference. Considering most of them aren't relevant to a server anyway, I don't consider this to be a factor.

2. The length of support may be an issue in some situations, but most people will update their server more often than every 5 years anyway.

3. I'm not sure what you mean by "external hardware support." Other than Ubuntu providing some proprietary drivers (which you wouldn't want on a server anyway), they have exactly the same hardware support.

4. I'm not even going to address security, because it's clear you don't know what you're talking about. The only thing that possibly qualifies as "Ubuntu spyware" is the desktop search, which is only in the desktop edition of Ubuntu, and is NOT removed by disabling root (root is already disabled by default).

5. Instability in a Linux system is caused mainly by proprietary drivers, which as I said is not an issue in a server environment. There's nothing to support a claim of one being more stable than the other.

In summary, my answer is that you need to do more research. Until then, the only serving you should be doing is at a restaurant.

Always go with Debian for servers. Ubuntu is primarily a desktop system, which is why it has so many more packages and the software is a bit more current. Debian releases take so long and the software is so old because they have to make sure that it is extremely stable. Ubuntu releases are made every six months and they are put out whether it is stable or not. When you have a server, especially one that faces the Internet, stability and security are everything.

Also, judging a distro based on the number of packages is not a good idea, since many of those packages are fonts and localization things. I rarely have more than 2,000 packages installed on any Linux system I have used, server or desktop.

One last thing, Google does not use Ubuntu and never did, it uses Debian now and once used its own custom Linux distro.

Ubuntu is aimed at desktop and server users using the Intel x86, x86-64, and (some versions) powerpc architectures only, whereas Debian runs not only on these but also on a huge range of hardware from embedded or handheld devices using ARM to MIPS processors to platforms such as Sparc, Intel's IA64 and Alpha, to name a few. There are advantages and disadvantages to supporting such a wide range of different hardware; one disadvantage Debian faces is that it takes more time and resources to ensure a piece of software works on all its architectures.

What do you want this server to do for you?

Consider SLAMPP - it is a web server built on Zenwalk, with Apache, MySQL, and PHP, and lots of other fun and useful software. VERY IMPORTANT - it is all configured for you, works at once, so you can use it without having to spend months learning how to configure it.

Based on Zenwalk, so it is very light and fast, good on old hardare.
