Tracking the development progress of Cinnamon is a major reason I have Mint installed on one of my partitions; I haven't encountered any show-stoppers in Cinnamon 1.6, most of the 'problems' I've noticed stem from inconsistencies in appearance and behavior caused by Cinnamon themes that deviate from standard in some way, but I understand that results can vary widely among users.

You can always just install MATE as a separate desktop session then see if it works better for you, that way you won't have to bother with a reinstall.

I don't know Cinnamon or Mate, but find the program Synaptic in the admin menu and open this. It requires your user password. When open click the reload so it updates the Repository Files. The click the search button and when the box opens type in Unity. If any of these are installed click each one and do a complete remove. Unity messes Linux Operating Systems up. Unity was a developers version of Linux and never intended to be used on home Desktop or Laptop Computers that had bugs, glitches and issues. I know where Unity came from and crashed several computers trying to use it. Then reboot the operating system.

This may not be the answer, but there is not a lot of difference between Cinnamon and Mate other than looks and what it has as the default programs. KDE would more than likely be the more stable Mint Version. The new KDE has a little bit of a learning curve compared to the older versions of KDE, but you learn to adjust to the difference. I am picky about the Desktop Environments I will use and KDE is not one of them for personal reasons.

If you like cool and neat, you could always use PCLinuxOS KDE Full Monty, But that is a very big DVD .iso download. That is if you have a good computer and not something too old. Understand tha Linux LiveCDs are not current or up to date with updated files or upgraded files. A user has to do this them self once it is installed. It would be impossible to constantly put out newer Linux Distribution CDs of one that already is available.

I haven't tried MATE, but I've been using KDE on two different systems (office = Nadia, home = Lisa) for a while now and I love it. Haven't come across any glaring bugs yet. (OK, dolphin crashes sometimes.)
