I run a website for parents and carers in my local community and would like to set up a great forum for all our members which can be easily accessible and fun! It also needs to be at a low cost or free :0) It would be good if I could have a domain name with it too but not completely necessary. Any ideas? I have searched the usual routes in internet browser but there is not much to choose from at present. I am not a professional webdesigner but can use most designing tools etc... (not all that coded complicated stuff!) lol

Try these:

http://www.simplemachines.org/ > a free forum software that's easy to install in your server.

http://www.ning.com/ > you can create your own social network (more than just a forum). It's free.

http://www.kickapps.com/ > similar to ning.com, this free service also allows you to create your own online community, with lots of customizable features. It can also integrate nicely into your existing website.

As for a free domain name, several webhosts offer a free domain name when you sign up. Shop around a bit first. If you choose this option, look for the ones that also let you easily install forum software like simplemachinesforum or phpBB). You can also ask your current host if they have this feature.

Take your pick. :)

If you’re going to create a forum site at your own domain without any forced ads, you need a web host providing forum tools (phpbb or vbulletin).

One of these services is reachable at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . Their service is really great and easy to use.

Try vBulletin, I use it and it works like a charm.
