I would like to make a database and start teaching myself T-SQL. What do I need to download?

I have a desktop running Microsoft Windows Vista, Home Premium. I would like to use either MS SQL 2005, or the 2008 CTP. It doesn't really matter to me. What I need to know is everything I need to download (links would be great) and install in order to be able to create a few files, and start coding some Transact SQL statements.

Can this be done on a stand-alone desktop system? Do I need "Management Studio"? What version? Do I need some kind of a .net framework download? Visual Studio? (I'm sorry, I really don't know much about this and am REALLY counting on the kindness of strangers to get me started.)

Thank you so much for taking the time to carefully answer.

Download SQL Server 2005 Express (easy to find)

Download SQL Server Management Studio Express

If you don't already have the required version of .Net Framework it will be installed with SQL Server.

Follow the steps listed here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/31/error-has-occurred-while-establishing-a-connection-to-sql-server-2005-which-does-not-allow-local-and-remote-connections/

I've had this exact problem... on some machines I've been able to resolve it, on other's I haven't. I do know that the steps listed in the above link can solve the problem though
