Which programming language was used to create both Yahoo and Google's main pages?

I'm talking about the first pages one sees when logging onto each site.

I tried developing and designing websites using basic HTML web development codes but saw that Google and Yahoo use another kind of language for development, maintenance and adjustments to their main pages.

Thanks in advance.

Google and Yahoo both use AJAX/JavaScript as far as I know.

If you're interested, you can learn AJAX and JavaScript on this site: http://www.w3schools.com/

They use several languages... but most of what you see actually rendered in the browser is HTML and javascript/AJAX.

The sites run on a server-side scripting language, though I don't know offhand which one. If I had to guess, I'd say PHP, but you never actually see it on the user side of things.
