It's your choice. If it were me I'd go for Linux. It's open source and has a good community support. A lot of companies have already switched over to Linux. Its easy to learn and is very secure.
Solaris is created by SUN in JAVA. Only JAVA programs were used to create the OS. There is also an open source implementation of Solaris, openSolaris.
You can try installing LINUX (I'd recomend Ubuntu) and Solaris to see which your more comfortable with.
Use VirtualBox to install them virtually.

Either one is good to learn, and both have bright futures.
Since you're a newbie though I would suggest going with a nice easy version of Linux, something like Ubuntu, or even better, Linux Mint, which is based off of Ubuntu.
It's a lot more user-friendly and has a lot of codecs already built-in or accessible to download easily.
If you go get into something more complex you may have a hard time learning since a lot of stuff revolves around command line.
Learn what you're doing with Linux first, then move onto Solaris. It will help you a LOT and make your learning process a lot easier.

Really, there is no difference. If you were to buy, say a Sun Ultra 10 3D workstation for $99 it would come with Solaris. I like the Sun desktop -- it's like working on a 9x9 meter tabletop. Solaris might force you to learn Unix commands faster is all. IMHO.
Rumors are: IBM is looking to buy Sun and that clouds the picture on Solaris.

Solaris because there is money in it. Oracle wouldn't be bad either.
