A very sincere and honest question...?

First of all, I want everyone to know that I'm 100% serious about this question... and specifically with regards to this area of computers and technology, programming and such...

I guess the question is multi-fold.

1) Why is it people ask for people to do their homework for them? First of all, they won't get an answer right away, like they could with a simple google search using the EXACT SAME WORDING... and secondly, what makes them think they have the right to circumvent their own learning by having other people do the work for them?

2) Why can't people figure out how to use a search engine? Seriously... type your question in the search box, and browse the first 3 or 4 results, and WHAM, there's your answer! Whatever happened to the drive to solve your own problems through personal research, instead of asking everyone else out there to do the research for you? Seriously, you could easily answer half of the questions asked by simply doing your own Google searches, but instead people impose on others to answer the question for them? *sigh*

3) How often are we going to see "How do I make a website?" questions? SERIOUSLY! I see like 4 or 5 of these per day!

4) When will people realize that there's a difference between programming and scripting? C++ : programming. PHP: Scripting. VB.NET: Programming. HTML: Scripting...

So yeah, some of this question is based in frustration... some of it is just my cynical humorous way of looking at the world.

Sadly, I join you in your frustrations. There are far too many people who have been spoon fed their entire life and they expect someone else to do things for them. They have never had to do anything on their own. As a member of several Yahoo groups designed to help others understand Photoshop Elements, there was often talk of a FAQ file that newbies could refer to for answers to the most often asked questions. I concluded that a FAQ would never work, NEVER! Why, because no one wants to look up the answer to their question and their problem. They would rather ask someone to give them the answer. It is unfortunate but these people will not learn what they ask the first time they ask. Simply because they did not put any effort into finding the answer.



On homework, I think that there are many who are in school because it was the thing they were to do. They are in the wrong course of study. Probably would be better served in a vocational school learning a particular trade. But do we have those kind of schools in the US now? I don't know.



For the subjects I seek to answer and provide help, I can generally tell from the question if the writer has any experience at all on the subject of the question. They are generally the most sincere in their request. The numerous, I really mean numerous, questions on where to obtain Photoshop free reflects poorly on the morals of those asking. Having never had to work for anything, they think that the efforts of others should be free to them. Hmmm, sounds like a wellfare state, very familar indeed.



These are just some of my thoughts on your question. I don't think you will find THE answer and so far, what I have read does not make me laugh. It is beyond a laughing matter.

I'm not really trying for best answer here, but...sometimes, people don't like to put things into Google because it's much easier to understand when people answer their question. If it's a piece of HTML code, or something, then I can understand your frustration, but I know when I post on here about programming I have come across a problem that I find specific explanations would really help me understand.



Usually there are four or five people who are quite willing to do so in a friendly manner that explains my problem well, because they can see where I'm having problems. Google can't.

Sometimes when people need help with their homework it's because they don't understand something. The terms aren't defined for them. Nobody does your whole homework in one of these little text boxes, but it can get you started, give you a kick. How do you drive a baby buggy? Tickle it's feet.



I don't know why, but a lot of people seem to have trouble with search engines. Some of us are just more comfortable with them than others, just like some of us know how to find something in a library and others don't. I got good with card catalogs decades ago but now when I go to the library I have to ask someone. Did you ever hear the one about the karate expert who joined the Army? The first time he saluted he knocked his brains out.



To someone who is not computer-literate, the difference between scripting and programming is very vague. PHP, GNU, HTML, VB, are all arcane alphabet soup to someone like this. So you have to explain to them patiently. Like the four-year-old boy who peeked into his parents bedroom and then didn't understand why he was being punished for sucking his thumb!

I'm not sure if i can make you laugh, but me too. Some of the most lame questions like "What is a MySpace?" Why can't they google it? Why don't they ask their friends, I mean, there is bound to be more than billions of people who use it. What a waste of energy for someone to read and respond to it. It isn't even worth the 10 points.



I'm afraid that some of the people today are still ignorant, like the fact that 37% of Americans can't locate the United States of America on a geographical map. There is ALWAYS a first to everything, so you can't expect everyone to know.

Thats a very very interesting question. I bet you sat and thought a long time about writing in with that one. I've had the same thoughts as you and I thought...do I...dont I??? I'm sure your reasons for asking it are 100% serious and it is quite clear to every one that there are repeated questions, but isnt that symptomatic of a growing need to have all of the answers to most things RIGHT NOW. I'm guessing that you are in the USA, I've no idea of the educational standards over there, but here in the UK multimedia education is very basic, and I for one wouldnt blame a young student for wanting to find solutions to problems.



I think also that much of the repetition of questions is down to people not really understanding basic concepts or softwares ( as you say about the difference between scripting and programming). They jump into Flash or Dreamweaver expectign to wave happily in their new multimedia sea, but find themselves not waving but drowning. Just look at how basic the information people give in asking for a reply.



I dont think on the askers part its laziness, I think its a genuine lack of knowledge, and if thats the case then those who have the knowledge should look after those who dont have it. The internet should be the ultimate intellectual welfare state.



I get a great deal of pleasure finding things out that I never thought I wanted to know!!!



ALso I dont think that yahoo answers helps much in that respect. I've got a wide range of interests in multimedia, and just recently I've been trying to pick up c++. I wanted to find an expanation of the differences between c and c++ from the perspective of a user, so I put it into yahoo answers. The resulting responses were from one year ago and non relevant to my search. If I was to ask a question about it it would probably be replicated. The problem being that there is no real categorised repository for peoples answers.



Rather than feeling frustrated at the inanity of the questions, isnt it better to think that someone,somewhere is looking to you for a reasoned and relatively helpful solution to a problem. Anyway, its getting near xmas, I've seen the CBS news over here ( thats if you are in teh US) and its cold isnt it. So take it easy and relax in the glow that you know more than them.



Incidentally, on the subject of scripting, I read on an actionscript forum about a user that said Flash was rubbish. Actionscript is useless for making movies he said. I typed into frame 1 "Man jumps of high building onto car chased by 3 monsters....he shoots them all dead", when I tested the movie it didnt even ask who I wanted to star in it. Ha ha.
