As far as I understand the password you have put is a BIOS password and It won't boot until you write the password, so you can't format and re-install your OS (actually it isn't necessary because when you can pass the BIOS all your applications and etc will be accessible)

To bypass BIOS password you have 3 possibilities :

you should know the place of the BIOS reset jumper on mainboard

1.if you don't have the manual of mainboard, you can visually inspect the little texts on the circuit near jumpers to find it (it is most likely to be labeled RST or BIOS RESET)

2.if you can identify the barnd/model of the board you can go to the website of the manufacturer (from another computer ofcourse) and download the manual as PDF

3.The always working and easy method is to locate the BIOS battery on the board (it is thinner and larger than a watch battery); remove it while the computer is totally powered-off (and not connected to the electric plug); wait some time (normally a couple of minutes would be fine but make it half an hour to make sure); and voila you have a fully reseted, password free BIOS.

Post-op ocmplications : If your BIOS isn't designed to automatically detect the harddisks it won't boot the OS. Go to the BIOS screen (most likely by pressing DEL while booting; follow on screen instructions) and there the first menu item on text based BIOS screen would be the disk drive settings set all of them to auto or if your bios is really really old look for "manualy detect harddisk" somewhere on your BIOS.

try booting into safemode and changing the password and then restarting your computer

To start the computer in safe mode

You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.

Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.

In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.

When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.

Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.

Notes

In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers (mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system services, and no network connections). You can choose the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, or you can choose the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option, which is exactly the same as safe mode except that a command prompt is started instead of the graphical user interface. You can also choose Last Known Good Configuration, which starts your computer using the registry information that was saved at the last shutdown.

Safe mode helps you diagnose problems. If a symptom does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and minimum device drivers as possible causes. If a newly added device or a changed driver is causing problems, you can use safe mode to remove the device or reverse the change.

There are circumstances where safe mode will not be able to help you, such as when Windows system files that are required to start the system are corrupted or damaged. In this case, the Recovery Console may help you.

NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.

hope this helps

There are two types of password...

1. BIOS password.... if this is the case.. you have to open your computer and reset the password jumper inside... see your motherboard manual.. you will find the jumper

2. Windows XP (other Windows password)-- in this case, if you loss administrative password, and you don't have another Administrative or other account then you have to reinstall Windows XP again.. on top of it (don't install fresh, it will delete all your file...) or Other option.. you can boot with LIVE CD (Knoppix) see www.knoppix.net and can backup and view the files/folder...
