you are talking about want to make your own operating system, that is what windows xp and windows vista are. Anyway here are some primate steps to make your own operating system.

I would suggest look up a linux-based OS, they will give you the source code for you to study at your own will. However writing the code yourself, it will never get to the level of complexity that windows and mac operating system have ever achieved.

Here is the project called "linux from scratch,"

As people have said creating something like windows vista/xp is a huge task and something a single person would never really do. If you want to make a custom operating system maybe you should look at creating your own linux distro?

As for getting into programming then good colledge courses are maths and maybe physics depending on what you are aiming for, For example if you wanted to go into the games industry. There are plenty of Uni courses out there that teach programming and if you dont have the grades a lot will let you do a foundation year.

While learning do as much extra work as you can at home, make plenty of demos, a good demo is what will get you your first job.

Dont go into programming to be rich, it pays well but there are much higher paid IT jobs however if you want to challenge yourself and enjoy solving problems then programming can be a very rewarding job.

There may be many people in a software team but in the end its you who actually puts it all together.

To get you started now try downloading a C++ compiler such as Visual Studio 2008 Express(its free), find some online tutorials, start with a "hello world" one.

If you're looking for a career in programming... Then you're in for a nasty surprise..

Programming is a tiny fraction of the whole computing and IT industry, and programmers are not paid as much as others..

Also, if you want to become a successful programmer, you will need business acumen, and you need to have great soft skills... So being a geek will not help.

But if you're looking for programming as a hobby, then I recommend reading books about Visual Basic, C++, C#...etc. Websites don't help that much, unless they are supported by large corporations.

Using Microsoft resources would be great for you..

I'm a member of the British Computer Society (BCS), and it did help me a lot on professional levels.. My friend who is just 26 makes £60,000 as an IT architect, but she doesn't do any programming...

Good luck!

I'll lay it out flat for you--you will never be able to create an operating system like Windows Vista by yourself. That operating system represents hundreds of thousands of hours of programming by an entire team of software developers--it is literally impossible for one person to code all that by themself.

If you want to learn how to program, your best option is to formally enroll in a college or university and major in software development. You will have the advantage of a large peer group, knowledgable instructors, tutors, and a tiered learning approach. You can try to teach yourself of course, but if you're serious about becoming a programmer you will definitely want a formal education.

well , depends what route you wanted to take.. personally I'd get a cheap book on C programming.. and maybe use linux or one of the free C compilers off "the free county" just google free C compiler.

or you can use visual studio express also..

learn a bit about programming via C would be good, then progress on to Object oriented coding..

there is plenty of info on C / C++ on the web though.

depends what sort of projects you wanted to do, I mean there are libs that are free that people can use.. like allegro (for games) and fmod etc

i took computer science in college, and ive always heard that it may have been a waste of time, well some of it. ive heard from different instructors that a 2 yr degree is all you really need now like networking, pc repair and things like that. i dont think there is much of a demand for programmers now or that there is so many of them i dont know. i am a network administrator and personally dont like programming but if its what you like to do than go for it. if you have to work might as well do something you like doing

If you want to do that type of programming start reading up on the programs c++, VB.net, Microsoft visual C++

But they have hundreds of programers, it would take one person years.

But start looking into different aspects of Programing. You can also take individual certified programs and earn certificates for varies programs.
