You can write in any word processor and install a PDF printer (like primo pdf) and print the document or book in that virtual printer to get the PDF file.

If you want a professional publishing software try using adobe pagemaker (now called InDesign) or microsoft publisher. The adobe software has export to PDF option.

You can first write in Microsoft Word, and then convert the word file to pdf file using the free Office to PDF converter

OpenOffice is the free counterpart to the MSOffice suite. OpenOffice will export PDF. OpenOffice will Open and SaveAs... MS format(s).



For what it's worth, OpenOffice is included with Ubuntu (linux) CD.
