Okay so I spent the last 4 hours installing linux ubuntu. It took me 4 tries to get just to install. Now when I boot it it gives me the login then goes to the command line. What do I type to get to the desktop?? I tried 'startx' but it just made the screen go blank and nothing else happens.

I agree with Richard. You may have to try to install a different driver.

I suggest to find another distro. Ubuntu is based on Debian. There are many distros based on Debian. There are many distros based on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu does not ship with any propitiatory software. To get some proprietary drivers (and codecs) you must plug your computer into the internet during install. This does not guarantee that all will work. Strange thing does sometimes happen.

There are distros that will work better out of the box.

Mint

PCLinuxOS (in my opinion the best out of the box)

Kwheezy

Pinguy OS

Zorin OS (although why have a GNU/Linux OS that looks like Winblows)

Added:

If your computer is that old, I recomend a distro for old or slow computers. Although Ubuntu will install on something as old as a Pentium 4, it is too slow to be usable (to me anyway).

For old or slow computers, have a look at:

LegacyOS (based on puppy and is really fast for an old P4 machine)

antiX

wattOS

SliTaz

Swift (ugly though)

usually if there is a situation like this, a boot parameter is added to the kernel boot line, and then once in the system you can install the required drivers:

but you could try installing Linux Lite instead, which should have better support for older computers:

https://www.linuxliteos.com/

or wattos:

http://www.planetwatt.com/blogs/1/15/watt-os-r6-new-release-info

(not micro watt, and you want version 6 for long term support)

it should not have taken 4 hours, that seems like a failing hard drive or other hardware. maybe it was only incompatibility with a fancy system like ubuntu.

Any chance that you downloaded the Ubuntu "Server Edition", instead of the "Desktop" edition?

With the correct edition (Desktop), you should be able to boot directly off of the installation media to a "live session", with the graphical interface.

It sounds like you have an incompatible video card. You may need to do some hacking to get the graphics to work. Normally, it should just start with the GUI after you log in.

What is your graphics hardware?

========

I still think something is wrong with X server - you may have an incompatible screen resolution.

try:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
