After re-installing windows XP pro and mapping my network drives (this is a work computer), when I go to control panel and click on a drive that I want to go to, a box pops up asking me to pick a program to use in order to open it. This has never happened before. All the other work computers automatically open the drive in windows explorer showing the folders etc.

I'm sure there is a setting somewhere. I checked the boot path and there is no conflicting operating system or anything funky like that.

Can anyone help?

Check the mapped drive for an "autorun.inf" file in the root...if it's there, that would cause it. Could also be a permissions issue...

Check the permissions on the drive and make sure they are set correctly

And for the record, any proclaimed digerati or technophile who takes offense at being called a geek is not likely to dispense any advice worth listening to...the rest of us where it as a badge of honor...

The problem is either one of two things, either the disk/drive has a bad auto-run file, or, it has no auto-run file.

Most computers have all disk/drives set to auto-run, auto-run means that when you put in the disk, it automatically starts running what is on it. If there is no auto run, Windows doesn't know what to do with it, due to the fact then when you double click, that tells it to auto-run.

All you should need to do is right click and click open, which should be the second or third option down.

Go to the Control Panel to open a drive? Don't you mean My Computer?

I would have helped but you called me a geek so I'm too busy sulking.
