A very valid question :-)

A bunch of courts asked Microsoft the same question quite some time back. It had wide scale ramifications since Microsoft was bundling IE into the OS and not allowing people to uninstall it. This meant that other companies making browsers (like Netscape) did not have a chance to compete against Microsoft since MS already had a monopoly on the PC market and was thus using that monopoly to push for IE on PCs.

MS gave an interesting reply to this one. They proved that IE was not a standalone application but something that formed part of their OS. They demonstrated that the IE libraries were so intimately used by Windows that removing/deleting them would crash Windows!

This single argument prevents IE from being uninstalled. You can read up more about this at

Hope this helps!

IE can't be removed by the usual methods; after all THAT was the main reason for the conflict between MS and others a few years back. IE is embedded really at the guts of Windows. It can be blocked as an autonomous piece of software, but it'll still be lurking there.

As for yahoo mail it should appear on the program list; if it doesn't obtain a copy of XP powertoys and get rid of it.

Yes, you find IE under Windows Components but actually it doesn't remove IE from your computer. It just deletes the icons and the links of it. This is because Microsoft wanted this way and they actually were sued for this. They tried to force people use their browser in this way, their java system and e-mail client.
