It's a Database program. A number of "Database Programs" are really just data miners (focusing on Queries), but MS Access actually allows You to build Tables, Queries, Forms, Reports, Macros, and VBA modules to cover both front-end (load/entry) & back-end (reporting/maintenance).

Typically it is used by individuals/small companies/departments for storing, manipulating, and reporting on "stuff". Anything from a Sales-Lead/Contact DB to a Productivity Tracking DB. We use it for customized reporting off an Oracle Data-Warehouse. It's interface allows us to build and automate Queries and Rreports quickly (days from Start to QA to Deliverable, as opposed to weeks or months required to have something mapped out, developed, and written into the Oracle code).

I'd say check out Microsoft's site for more examples of what it can be used for.

MS Access is a Relational DB. Unlike MS Excel, MS Access is 2 Dimensional database while the former is flat database. example. In excel you cannot do worksheet data relationship into one-is-to-many relationship separating one main spreadsheet to a child spreadsheet and connect each data into many data with related index. Although, Flat Database can also be designed in MS Access, but most of the time it is not advisable and applicable.

Microsoft Access is a database software program that makes manipulating data manageable for users of many skill levels. You can input data and sort, filter or group information according to your needs. It's particularly useful when there are thousands of records and sorting through them individually would take hours. Access allows you to obtain the information quicker by providing a few commands to tell the program what is being sought. Reports can be created, too, that pull information out of the database according to the project parameters.
