The Microsoft Command Prompt is more commonly referred to as DOS. Back before Windows, users were greeted with a full-screen version similar to the one you see. It can run programs, as well as execute in-built commands. It is usually now used for diagnostic purposes and to execute batch tasks by advanced users. If you do not have a fair grasp of the command prompt, I recommend you avoid using it. Although it seems like a simple program, it has the capability to make system-wide changes which may crash your computer. If you do wish to learn more about the Command Prompt, try http://www.commandpromptcommands.com/ or http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds.mspx. Please note that you cannot uninstall the Command Prompt as it is an integral part of Windows 95-NT, and some programs on XP. Vista computers will have an advanced version of the Command Prompt.

that is how you tell the computer what to do line by line. mostly used for programmers and technicians when they need to access commands without all the fancy screen displays. can also be used to do file searches etc if correct command is used. basically it's the old DOS prompt.

You use that to run commands, such as IPCONFIG.

Even the utility to disable IE7 auto update are run from these command prompts.

So yes, its still in need and are very useful for people who knows how to use them.
