I'm looking for someone to take my website to the "next level" using PHP with SQL, I do not have the time required to get in that deep. I have a close friend who's son is a Webmaster and I would like to ask him if he is interested in the work but I don't want want him to jump and say yes to try to get the work with both of us being ultimately being disappointed and possibly straining my relationship with my friend.

What you need is a web developer.

Particularly a web developer with experience on on a LAMP (Linux, Apache,MySQL, PHP) platform.

It's possible a webmaster has these skills, the title webmaster ( like any job title) can be a bit vague. It usually means they are in general in charge of the overall operation of a website, The question is, does that website use PHP and SQL? Does he have a developer (in house or outsourced) to do the programing work.

Bottom line is you'll have to ask him. Maybe before telling him why you're asking ask him if he's made a LAMP based website utilizing PHP and MYSQL.

On the other hand, even if he is experienced, there are other complications that might come up ( doesn't deliver for some other reason, takes too long, misunderstanding about money) that could strain your relationship with your Friend. Maybe you should find someone else anyway.

Is this Webmaster a developer?

Building a web application with php and MySql is easy process but you have to keep in mind that this guy needs to have developing background.

Mostly webmasters would use something like word press or Jumla free source applications that can do the job.

Php has security measures that needs to be considered and he needs to know about there basics.

You will need to make your website dynamic that means he needs to think of this developing project as dynamic web development so in near future you don't need to rebuild it.

I suggest you sit with this guy and ask him about his knowledge.. I'm .net developer and now working with php in my new assignments i was shocked in some security processes that's need to be taken care of in any web application from sql injection to http injection and so on.

Best Regards,

Hope i could help

You should ask him for an interview first or just talk with him informally.

Typically programming doesn't come with the attributions of a webmaster. Most webmasters are familiar with one or more programming languages and/or database systems, but a webmaster's tasks are more about website administration than programming.

A webmaster is more of a general specialist in the matters of maintaining a website who knows a little of everything.
