If you were making a website, why do you need coders? What do they do?

There are 3 types of people who work on a website. Out of those 3 there are more flavors and maybe a manager, but the basic 3 are:
1) Designer - if you don't just throw plain text on your page, you will probably need someone to make a web design for you (the way the buttons look, how pictures have a nice border around them etc).
2) Front End Coder - a person who takes the design and transforms it in HTML and CSS (google both if you don't know what they are).
3) Back End Coder - a person who takes care of the logic of your website. Most of the time this is needed when you have a big blog, or a website like yahoo answers where users can save data into your website etc.
It depends on what you want: A simple 3~5 page site where you just show of some stuff that you like, or something more complex.

If you're making a 1 to 5 page static web site, you don't need a coder for that. If you want an interactive website with dynamic content, then you need a coder to write the programs that make your website function.
Basically anything more advanced than plain HTML you'll need someone with some coding knowledge to build it.

You do not need a coder. You can use a CMS or website builder.
You need coder only for very special tasks. Majority tasks are solving now without coding.

Websites are designed based on code (typically HTML) that creates what you see on the screen. If you're not familiar with the code it can be difficult, but not impossible, to make a webpage. You can use programs such as Dreamweaver (http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/) to do this coding visually (the program codes it for you in the background) but it helps to know the back end as well.
If you want to see what HTML looks like there is usually a way to view the code of the page you are viewing on your browser. It's typically under the 'view' dropdown menu and is called 'view source' or something similar.
