i honestly have no idea what these versions stands for , and what is the difference between them , can you please explain a little .

What you listed are different architectures. i386 and ia64 is the Intel 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. amd64 is the AMD 64-bit platform. It depends on what processor your server has.



If you are setting up a server for the first time, i would suggest getting Ubuntu Server from www.ubuntu.com :)

those versions are the type of machine/processors. Something to know is that the different versions of linux do things better than other versions.



You might want to install a version on a desktop to get the feel of linux. the core functionality is much like the familiar windows environment.



Try looking at

Ubuntu - very user friendly, large support community

Fedora - solid web server

Red Hat - large corporate version of linux
