How do I make bar codes with Code 39?

Question

I have downloaded and installed a Code 39 font. I was under the impression that all I needed to do to create a working bar code was to:
- write the text (in Word)
- surround it with stars (e.g. *test*)
- change the font to Code 39
and voila!
But my bar code reader won't read the printed result, and it DOES read Code 39.

What am I missing?

i downloaded the font. I extracted the zip file to the desktop and got a directory named:

IDAutomation.com Free Code 39 Font

as well as a file called install.exe



Executing install.exe installed the font.



The last step in the installation procedure is to reboot the computer.

I then went into word wrote something, I selected the text and chose font IDAutomationHC39. This converted the text into barcode.

Oooooooooooooooo barcodes, I love 'em...



Ok,, 39 is easy. Try to open a word processor and scan the bar code, can you read the text? No? Possible answers I'd look for:

- Is the reader programmed for 39? There s a booklet that came with the reader, stuffed with ... barcodes. You need this to program the reader. Basically you'd read a "start program" code (possibly one of the first pages) scan the required codes (in sequence) and scan an "end program" code

- What do you print it with? A jet? Forget jets, the image they spit out is NOT nearly sharp enough, you need a laser printer (or a real barcode printer - if you can afford it)

- What do you use to interpret the code with? Does your "receiving" software (cash register, stock program, logger, whatever) "understand" the little starts? Check that too



I think 39 can handle starts nicely....
