Oracle isn't the most resource friendly database, if your running it on your machine - you'll need quite a bit of memory ( runs OK in 4GB ).

You should probably be running the Oracle XE version as well ( http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/overview/index.html ) which runs on most things ( XP, Vista, Linux ) and is free to download and use.

If you want to install it on another machine, then do a normal install on the second machine and then donwload the Oracle Database 10g Express Client ( http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/downloads/102xewinsoft-090667.html ) and that needs to be installed on your machine. ( There are other ways of doing this if you have problems - but try this first ).

One thing - your server will either need to have a server name that you can access, or a fixed IP address. You'll need that when you connect to the database. Oh - and also check if you have any firewalls active - these are a quick way of stopping the whole thing working.

Oracle server runs on Windows Server 2008, not desktop versions of Windows.

Actually, that's incorrect. you most certainly can use two IPs on one LAN connection. Go into the network connections in Control Panel. Double click the connection and do "properties". Highlight "Internet Protocol", and select "properties" Click the "Alternate Configuration" tab Select "User Configured" and put the second IP address you want to use.
